10 tips to prevent childhood obesity
Childhood obesity is a chronic disease considered to be epidemic. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are an estimated 22 million children in the world under the age of 5 that are overweight or obese, with six million in Brazil, when considering children and young people. The estimate for 2015 is that there will be 2.3 billion overweight adults and 700 million obese adults. The 2009 Campaign of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) warns that obesity has become the second leading preventable cause of cancer.
Sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits, as well as genetic and psychological factors, are among the main agents for the increase of childhood obesity. Replacing fried foods with natural snacks or the computer with playing group games are some alternatives, although appeals for eating treats are tempting even for adults. That is why nutritional education is a challenge that needs to be confronted by everyone.
